Letter Coding Decoding -Forward Sequence

Letter Coding Decoding Forward Sequence

For conveying secret messages from one place to another , especially in Defense Services, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), coding is used. The codes are based on various principles/patterns such that the message can be easily be deciphered at the other end. Now-a-days, in certain competitive examinations, such questions are given to judge the candidates intelligence and mental ability.

Letter Coding Decoding - Forward Sequence : This is the pattern of coding which exhibits the correlation of letter in the alphabetical order. For instance, alphabets A to Z are assigned the numeric codes from 1 to 26 where each letter gets the assignment in the pattern as follow A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc.

Example 1 : If LOFTY is coded as LPFUY, then DWARF will be written as :'

(A) DXASF             (B)  DXBSG            (C)  DXATF             (D)  DWBSG

Solution : According to the question ,  adding alternately 0 and 1 to the alphabets will get you the answer :

  • L + 0 = L
  • O + 1 = P
  • F + 0 = F
  • T + 1 = U
  • Y + 0 = Y
  • Similarly, D + 0 = D, W + 1 = X , A + 0 = A , R + 1 = S and F + 0 = F . Hence the answer is DXASF, option A.

Example 2 : In a certain code language, ‘PICTURE’ is written as ‘QJDUVSF’. How would ‘BROWSER’ be written in that same code language?

    (A) CQVVTDS                       (B) CQPVTDS                  (C) CSPXTFS                         (D) CQVPPDS             (e) None of these

    Answer : (C)

Solution : Clearly, the letters in the word PICTURE are moved one step forward to obtain the letters of the code. Thus, we have :

  • P + 1 = Q
  • I + 1 = J
  • C + 1 = D
  • T + 1 = U
  • U + 1 = V
  • R + 1 = S
  • E + 1 = F
  • Similarly, for ‘BROWSER :

  • B + 1 = C,
  • R + 1 = S,
  • O + 1 = P,
  • W + 1 = X,
  • S + 1 = T,
  • E + 1 = F and R + 1 = S. Hence the answer is CSPXTFS.
  • Example 3 : In a certain code, TEACHER is written as VGCEJGT. How is CHILDREN written in that code ?

    (a)  EJKNEGTP      (b)  EGKNFITP          (c)  EJKNFGTO           (d)  EJKNFTGP

    Answer : (d)

Solution : Clearly, each letter in the word TEACHER is moved two steps forward to obtain the corresponding letter of the code.

    T +2 = V ( 22)

    E  +2 = H (7)

    A +2 = C (3)

    C +2 = E (5)

    H +2 = J (10)

    E +2 = G (7)

    R +2 = T (20)

    Similarly, we have,

    C +2 = E (5)

    H +2 = J (10)

    I +2 = K (11)

    L +2 = N (14)

    D +2 = F (6)

    R +2 = T (20)

    E +2 = G (7)

    N +2 = P (16)

So, the desired code is EJKNFTGP.

Example 4 : In a certain code language, RUSTICATE, is written as QTTUIDBSD. How would STATISTIC be written in that code ?

    (a) RSBUJTUHB           (b)    RSBUITUHB           (c)   RSBUIRSJD           (d)  TUBUIDBSD

    Answer : (b)

Solution : Clearly, the middle letter of the word remains unchanged in the code. Each of the first two and the last letters of the word is moved one step backward, while each of the remaining letters is moved one step forward to obtain the corresponding letters of the code.

    R - 1 = Q

    U - 1 = T

    S +1 = T

    T +1 = U

    I + 0= I

    C +1 = D

    A +1 = B

    T -1 = S

    E - 1 = D

    Similarly, we have ,

    S - 1 = R

    T - 1 = S

    A +1 = B

    T +1 = U

    I +0 = I

    S + 1 = T

    T +1 = U

    I -1 = H

    C -1 = B

So, the required code is RSBUITUHB.

Example 5 : If ROAST is coded as PQYUR in a certain language, then how will SLOPPY be coded in that language ?

    (a)  MRNAQN          (b)  NRMNQA  (c)  QNMRNA   (d)  RANNMQ

    Answer : (c)

Solution :  Clearly, the letters in the word ROAST are moved alternately two step backward and two step forward to obtain the letters of the code. Thus, we have :

    R -2 = P

    O +2 = Q

    A - 2 = Y

    S + 2 = U

    T - 2 = R

    Similarly, we have ,

    S -2 = Q

    L +2 = N

    O -2 = M

    P +2 = R

    P -2 = N

    Y +2 = A

So, the required code is QNMRNA.
